August 2009

We just came back from a great summer camping trip with our dog. The location was beautiful, the weather perfect and the time with friends and family was awesome. Did we have a little excitement? Absolutely. On the first night, we were sitting around the campfire talking with friends when our Rhodesian Ridgeback Jessie, decided to chase a forest inhabitant. Unfortunately for Jessie, and all of us around her, Jessie’s subject was a skunk. Before we could even get out of our camping chairs Jessie got sprayed in the eyes and mouth. She came running back foaming, sneezing and rubbing her eyes.

Poor thing. The taste must have been horrible, the smell sure was atrocious. I immediately proceeded to remove the excess and washed her with some shampoo. Of course that did nothing… To the rescue came my friend with her can of tomato juice. Apparently that is the best home remedy for skunk odor.

I doused Jessie with tomato juice and cleaned her eyes with saline solution and we waited patiently for the juice to dry. That did take a little while since Jessie’s fur is so thick but to my amazement when it did dry, most of the stench was gone. In the morning she was as good as new.

That next evening by the campfire Jessie stayed by us. I am not sure what kind of lesson she learned, but I sure did learn one. When camping in the woods, pack tomato juice!

Because of this extra camping excitement I decided to do a little research and came up with a good camping list of essentials to take when camping with dogs. You can download the iPetScene Camping Checklist FREE here.

Once in a while you come across a cool product that you are totally impressed with. Well, I have to say the brushes from Pet Head did the trick for me. Sure they look like countless other pet brushes, but they come equipped with extra bonuses that just make life easier!Pet Head Rake

First lets talk about the Pet Head Dog Undercoat Rake

Not only did it remove all knots, loose hairs and tangles; it also turned my pet’s coat into silky, soft goodness. I would have been happy with that amazing performance, but wait there is more! The Pet Head Dog Undercoat Rake had a little button that separated the teeth of the rake from the body; making it super easy for me to remove the tangled mess from the brushes. That little extra design feature scored huge with me!

Pet Head BrushesAnother brush I tried was the Pet Head Fabulous Dog Pin Brush. This one is ideal for wavy and curly coats; since my pet did not fit the profile I went on a small trip and visited a friend with super hairy, curly and wavy dog. The brush was a hit! The hair was brushed to perfection with all the tangles separated and easily removed by the rounded pins. My hands? They were fine thanks to the brush’s ergonomic design. And once again I was surprised to find a bonus “hidden” comb built inside the brush. Another huge hit with me! The little comb is perfect for around the eyes, or to remove the hair from the brush.

I have to say, Pet Head’s products for pets are just as outstanding a the ones for people. These folks know what they are doing! I love their stuff…my pets do too!

You can find the brushes at several pet shops and online at iPetScene Online shop powered by Amazon.
