Pet Urine Problems?

12/30/2008

There are a thousand urine remover products out there but are they good or just fragrant? I have bought several different brands and with the majority of them my cat urinated in the very same spot! I would use the product, follow the directions and even smell the spot to make sure there were no lingering odors, and the next day the cat would pee again on the same spot! I even tried pure white vinegar and that only made the house stink!

After my cat’s latest bout with urinary track infection I became more and more disillusioned with urine removers, (and frankly sick and tired of cleaning up the same area), so i decided to do a thorough investigation. I spent hours online, posted thousands of questions on pet related forums and cleaning forums and in the end found the best product.

It is not a masking product it is a live enzyme that eats away the organic waste. Every since i found LiquidAlive® I have had no more lingering urine smells. My cat has not gone back to the same spot and I am trilled he is back on track and enjoying his litter box.

No more urine smell, no more vinegar smell, no more flowery pee smell. Liquid Alive® works!

Here is what the product manufacturer has to say:
“Dymon LIQUID ALIVE® Enzyme Producing Bacteria digests and liquifies organic waste, grease and food by-products eliminating malodors and reducing suspended soils. It is highly resistant to disinfectants, detergents, sanitizers and free chlorine.

* Pleasant fragrance immediately neutralizes odors
* Safe, non-toxic, non-acid and non-alkaline

The biodegradable, nontoxic formula is both safe and easy to use. Plus, formula is nonstaining on carpets and upholstery.”

There are several reputable online shops that sells it. I bought it at the Betty Mills Company.

You can also find it locally at places that sell carpet cleaners and janitorial supply. They sell this in several sizes and a 32 oz. bottle is under $10.00. Worth every penny!

When I hear “pet manicure” I flinch. I flinch because I usually have to chase my pets around as they know what is coming when I show up with the nail clippers. The task is usually a difficult one and it is one of my least favorite things to do. I fear hurting them and wounding their trust in me so I was thrilled to be introduced to PediPaws™, a tool that promised to file their nails smoothly without much fuss.

I was excited when I got my PediPaws™, so I made a quick trip to the store for the required 2 “C” Alkaline batteries. Before trimming my pet’s nails I watched a small video on the manufacturer’s site and I followed the easy instructions. I specially liked the tips on offering praise and treats to get them to comply. Great video! You can view the PediPaws™ video here.

I tried it on my dogs and cats and was pleasantly surprised. The PediPaws™ is quiet, easy to use, effective and efficient. I was not sure of the noise level before getting this and I was thrilled when I heard how quiet it was.

My cats and small dog were very easy to handle and in a few minutes I gave them the perfect pedicure, painless for me and for them. I let them check it out first and quickly learned that when the whole family was around they were agitated and too feisty. As soon as I sent everyone away, the cats co-operated and got a nice pedicure!

You can see my cat Mia waiting for her turn to get a pedicure!

My big dog Jessie, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, was a lot more rambunctious and harder to hold, but once she saw that it was not going to hurt, and realized that I was not going to let her go, the PediPaws™ went ahead and performed beautifully. It did help that my daughter held her and provided some distraction but I am sure with more experience we’ll both be better at it.

So how about the end result on my little test? I was impressed with this tool, it was a lot quieter than I expected, easy to use and I think it’s a keeper! How about my pet’s nails? Their nails looked a lot smoother than when I used the nail cutter and the whole experience was a lot less traumatic for them and for me!

PediPaw™’s site says:
“PediPaws™ gently and painlessly files your Pet’s nails to leave them trim, rounded and smooth. Say goodbye to scratched furniture and floors forever!

PediPaws™ is the revolutionary nail trimmer for your dog or cat. It’s the newest and fastest way to keep your pet’s nails trim rounded and smooth with no mess! Now you can easily trim your pet’s nails anywhere without the pain caused by traditional nail clippers. The secret is PediPaws™’ precision emery filing wheel that gently removes thin layers of nail to leave your pet’s paws touchably soft and your home safe from scratches.”

You can purchase PediPaws™ at several stores, as well as online stores and directly at the product’s website: www.Pedipaws.com. The price for the PediPaws™ is $19.99. The manufacturer also offers replacement heads and they came packaged in sets of ten for $9.99.

Is Your Dog Obese?

10/20/2008

The first FDA-approved prescription medication to manage obesity in dogs is here! It is called Slentrol and your veterinarian can prescribe it.  It is made specifically for dogs and it is the first prescription canine weight-loss product in the US.

It is important to stress that this prescription medicine is not a cure for obesity and it should not replace adequate diet and exercise.

According to the manufacturer website:

Why is it important for my dog to lose weight?
Obesity in dogs is an important medical condition with serious health consequences. Dogs that are obese have more difficulty with their joints (arthritis), breathing and heart problems. They also are more likely than normal weight dogs to get infections on their skin and to have problems with anesthesia and surgery.

Dogs that are obese don’t run and play as much as dogs who carry less extra weight. They seem to have less fun than other dogs because of this. They often have trouble going up stairs, getting into cars and just simply walking down the street.

Managing obesity in your dog is not a matter of “looking good” it’s about managing serious health consequences. Controlling obesity can prevent some serious health consequences and improve your dog’s quality of life.

How does SLENTROL work?
SLENTROL is a medicine called an MTP inhibitor. It works by preventing some of the fat your dog eats from being absorbed into the body. When that happens a message is sent to your dog’s brain that tells him he’s full. In fact, one of the first things you’ll notice is that your dog won’t want to eat as much as before. The weight loss happens because your dog is eating less food.

If you suspect your dog is overweight, contact your veterinary as soon as possible. Only he or she can provide the best assessment and solutions.

DogPause – The Healthy Dog Bowl

Jessie Girl my Rhodesian Ridgeback eats so fast I guarantee you she cannot taste anything. She scarfs the food fast and noisily. Is that healthy? No way.
